Desert Horses of Namib

The Desert Horses of Namibia, are found at the Garub Waterhole (just outside of Aus).
Their exact origin is still widely debated, some believe they are descendants of the German cavalry horses from the first World War while others say that they are survivors of a shipwreck along the Namib coast.

These horses have adapted to survive jn the harsh circumstances of the Namib Desert allowing them to go days without water, live off of sparse desert grasses and slow their metabolism during droughts.

The Namib Desert Horses are often seen as a symbol of resilience and freedom in Namibia.

Summer heat getting to you?

The heat of the Kgalagadi summers leads to interesting sightings, such as this Hyena cooling off in the waterhole.

Interesting: It is actually a larger problem than one might think if a Hyena baths in a waterhole. Because they are so dirty they contaminate the water, making it near undrinkable for other animals for hours - which can be catastrophic in the heat of the summer when water is scarce.

Basics Of Tracking Wildlife - Part 3 of 5

Tracks tell a story, and by observing closely, you can interpret the animal’s behaviour.

• Walking vs. Running: Tracks that are evenly spaced and organised likely indicate a relaxed walk. Scattered or deeper impressions might suggest the animal was running.

• Grazing or Resting: If tracks are clustered or if you see evidence of grazing (like nibbled plants) or bedding (like a body imprint), the animal may have stopped to eat or rest.

• Interactions: Multiple tracks from different animals can indicate interactions. For example, overlapping tracks of a predator and prey species could suggest a chase or encounter.

By learning to read these patterns, you’re not just identifying the animal—you’re understanding its actions and movements.

Basics Of Tracking Wildlife - Part 2 of 5
Timing is everything in tracking. Knowing how old a track is can help you understand if the animal is nearby or has moved on.

• Fresh Tracks: Crisp edges and damp impressions usually mean the track is recent. Morning dew, wind, and sunlight can all impact track freshness.

• Older Tracks: As tracks age, they start to lose definition, and may be covered by dust, leaves, or even insect activity. Look for signs of weather or other animals altering the track.

• Environmental Clues: The time of day, sun position, and weather patterns all influence track ageing. For example, tracks made at night can look fresh in the morning, but the sun quickly dries and changes their appearance by midday.

Learning to age tracks takes practice, but paying attention to detail can give you valuable clues about how close the animal might be.

Basics Of Tracking Wildlife - Part 1 of 5

The first step in tracking is recognizing and identifying tracks left behind. In Southern Africa, learning the basic shapes and details can help you determine which animal passed by.

• Big Cats: Look for round prints without claw marks—lions, leopards, and other big cats have retractable claws, so their claws don’t usually show in their tracks.

• Other Predators: Animals like hyenas and jackals leave prints with visible claw marks since their claws aren’t retractable. Their prints are generally more oval than round.

• Herbivores: Hoofed animals like antelope, buffalo, and zebra leave unique hoof-shaped prints. Antelope tracks, for example, are typically split and point forward, resembling a heart shape.

Start with these basics to identify which group the animal belongs to. Once you know the type, you can dive deeper into individual species.

What would you do in this situation?

While staying at Rooiputs in the Kgalagadi we had some visitors. The lion pride in the area came to rest under the chalets to escape the heat.
Now, I don’t know about you but if there is an entire pride of Lions under my chalet, you better believe im waiting for them to leave before entering.
The lioness even made herself comfortable in-front of the doorway.

The Lipizzaners originated from the Habsburg Empire in the 16th century, bred for battle and royal performances. Today, these horses are celebrated for their classical dressage shows.

This is how I capture storytelling nature images:

1. Time of day: Many photographers say “golden hour is the only time to capture nice images,” but this isn’t true. I’ve taken photos in the middle of the day that now feature on the inside cover of the newest @gomagsa

2. Go out when no one else does: When Cape Town is stormy and everyone is staying indoors by the fireplace, @fjo___oo and I see it as an opportunity to go hiking. We get to see waterfalls in ways most people never do, and as soon as the rain stops, the birds come out to feed. To capture images that make your viewers stop scrolling, take pictures in unusual ways—this could mean unique angles or shooting in uncommon weather.

3. Patience: In nature photography, patience is key. You need to sit and wait for the perfect moment.

Did you know that you can create breathtaking waterfall photos like these with your iPhone?

Heres how:
1. Open the camera app
2. Switch on live photo, by pressing the live photo icon.
3. Set up your phone at a waterfall (Important: It is crucial that your phone doesn’t move while taking the photo, I recommend using a tripod, or alternatively just leaning your phone against a rock)
4. Take the photo
5. Open your photo and press the “live” option and select “long exposure”.
6. And there you have it, a long exposure photo with your iPhone!
